Elements & Principles of Design: Texture

๐Ÿ˜„ Joke of the day: What's a vector's favorite exercise? Stretching -- it never loses quality.

โฐ Do Now — Start Here

Look at the "Texture" section of our reference chart. Find one object in the room that shows this concept.

๐ŸŽฏ Today's Big Question

๐Ÿ“ˆ By the End of Today, You Will Be Able To

  1. Define texture using the class Elements & Principles of Art reference chart.
  2. Identify texture in at least 2 real design/art examples.
  3. Create a rubbing/collage or hand-drawn study showing at least 3 different implied textures.

๐Ÿงฐ What You'll Need

๐Ÿ“‹ Your Plan for Today

Day 1: Understanding Texture

  1. Do Now (5 min): find one object in the room that shows today's concept.
  2. Mini-lesson (10 min): define texture using the reference chart and 2-3 real examples.
  3. Guided sketch (10 min): as a class, sketch a quick shared example showing texture. Independent studio time, part 1 (18 min): begin your own paper piece exploring texture.
  4. Quick check-in (2 min): show a neighbor where you're starting.

Day 2: Finishing & Critique

  1. Do Now (5 min): explain texture in your own words, no notes. Studio time, part 2 (25 min): finish your paper piece, applying texture intentionally throughout.
  2. Self-critique (3 min): before posting your work, write your own "I notice / I wonder" sentence about it.
  3. Gallery walk & peer feedback (10 min): post finished work; using the "I notice / I wonder" protocol, leave one specific sticky note on a classmate's piece naming exactly how they used texture, not just a compliment.
  4. Written artist statement (5 min): 1-2 sentences on how you used texture, and whether the feedback you received matched your own self-critique.

Composition
The overall arrangement of elements and principles within a piece of design or art.

โœ… What Your Finished Work Should Include

๐Ÿš€ The Extra Mile

Cross-Class Connection: The same tactile-description skill an English class asks for in sensory writing — texture is visual "show, don't tell."

Career Connection: Texture rendering is a real, testable skill in Illustration and Fashion Design portfolios.
