Substitute Teacher Guide • Grade 9 • Unit 0: CTE Onboarding & Career Readiness
Setting Up Your Career Pathways (CPP) Account
Today's focus: Setting Up Your Career Pathways (CPP) Account
⚠️ Heads-Up: New-student onboarding
Run this lesson in the first week for any student setting up Career Pathways for the first time; returning 10th-graders can use the time to double-check their existing account instead (see Grade 10, "Welcome Back").
✅ Before Students Arrive
- Materials needed today:
- Chromebook or classroom computer with internet access
- Personal email address
- School ID number
- Parent/guardian's name, phone number, email, and home address
- Expected graduation year
- Most students keep their class notebook at its usual spot in the room and use it every day (see routine below) -- but it's each student's own notebook, so a few may bring theirs from home instead. Either way, everyone should have one out.
- Write today's Do Now on the board before the bell rings (see below).
📓 Daily Notebook Routine (students already know this)
Keep this going every day, in your class notebook: date today's entry, jot your Do Now response, add any new vocabulary word(s) from today's Key Vocabulary section (word + a quick picture + a simple definition in your own words), and take 60 seconds to sketch something connected to today's topic. This notebook is yours to study from, reference on projects, and pull evidence from later for your portfolio.
🗣️ Opening: Do Now
Write or project this, and have students start immediately:
“Do you already have all 5 things on the board? (personal email, school ID, parent/guardian contact info, home address, graduation year) Check with a partner if you're missing any -- we need them all today.”
📋 Class Plan (step by step)
-
Step 1 — 5 min
🗣️ Say: "Today we're looking at ___." Then walk through the point(s) below at the front of the room.
📋 Mini-lesson (5 min): why NYC tracks CTE participation through Career Pathways, and how it can help them later (internships, transcripts, scholarships).
-
Step 2 — 25 min
🗣️ Say: "Let's do the first one together, then you'll try the rest on your own."
📋 Guided account creation (25 min): as a class, go to https://participants.careerpathways.nyc/ together. Project the steps. School access code: 09X403-000000. Students enter their own information at their own device while the teacher circulates.
-
Step 3 — 10 min
🗣️ Say: "Here's what we're doing next." Then read the instructions below to the class.
📋 Troubleshooting & individual help (10 min): support students who are stuck on email verification, spelling of parent info, etc.
-
Step 4 — 5 min
🗣️ Say: "Here's what we're doing next." Then read the instructions below to the class.
📋 Confirm and screenshot (5 min): each student screenshots or writes down their confirmation so we can verify everyone completed registration.
🔑 Vocabulary Introduced Today
- Career Pathways NYC (CPP)
- NYC's system for tracking CTE students' credentials, work-based learning, and internship eligibility across high school.
- Access Code
- A code your school gives you so the system knows which school and program to attach your account to.
- Work-Based Learning
- Any structured activity (job shadow, internship, guest speaker, site visit) that connects classroom learning to a real workplace.
✅ Wrap-Up: Exit Ticket
A few minutes before the bell, say: "Time to finish your exit ticket."
“Write one sentence: why might a college or employer care that you have a Career Pathways record?”
Collect exit tickets (or have students leave them in the usual spot) for the regular teacher to review.
⏳ If You're Short on Time
Protect the Do Now and the Exit Ticket above all else -- those are how the regular teacher tracks daily progress. If a step above is optional/homework, or is a "share out"/discussion step, shorten or skip it first.
⏳ If Students Finish Early
Have them keep working in their notebook: add extra detail to today's vocabulary sketch, review previous vocabulary, or -- if this is a portfolio update week for this class -- work on their portfolio. Early finishers should never be idle or distracting to classmates still working.
