🧰 Materials & Tools

🧠 Do Now (Warm-Up)

Look at the 3 images posted. Which one do you think is "art," which is "design," and which could be both? Explain your choice.

📋 Main Workshop / Lesson Sequence

  1. Do Now + debate: defend your categorization to a partner (8 min).
  2. Mini-lesson: introduce the course philosophy -- design is art with a purpose, created for a client and an audience, and built using a repeatable process (12 min).
  3. Small groups: for each of the 3 example images, identify the client, the audience, and the purpose (15 min).
  4. Whole-class share and preview of the year ahead: history, typography, color, Photoshop mastery, real client projects, and the PBAT/portfolio at the end (10 min).

✅ Assessment & Exit Ticket

Exit ticket + group share-outs checked for a clear client/audience/purpose identification.

Exit Ticket: In your own words, finish this sentence: "Design is art with a purpose because ___."

📊 Pull up the anonymous Class Check-In for students to fill out before they go.

🧩 Differentiation & Accommodations

English Language Learners: model every step live, then check in one-on-one; provide translated materials and vocabulary support as needed. Students with IEPs: apply the accommodations and modifications listed in each student's plan (examples include extended time, graphic organizers, speech-to-text tools, chunked instructions, and visual schedules). Students with attention-related needs: break tasks into short, checklist-driven steps and provide brief movement or focus breaks. Students ready for a challenge: take on a leadership role critiquing peers' work, extend the project with a second iteration, or research how today's skill is used professionally in the field.
