๐๏ธ Before Class: Teacher Prep
- Gather/set out: Printed magazine/ad images (teacher-provided, at least 6 varied examples), Scenario cards (printed), Purpose & Audience worksheet (paper), Product cards for the "create your own" activity (e.g. sneakers, phone case, cereal), Pencils.
- If today includes physical/hands-on work: make sure the classroom cameras are charged, working, and have a cleared SD card ready for photo uploads.
- Print today's student handouts (see ๐จ๏ธ Student Handouts below) in the language versions your class needs.
- Pull up today's slide deck (see ๐ฅ๏ธ Slide Deck below) so it's ready to project.
๐จ๏ธ Student Handouts (print, one per class day)
Word + picture + definition + a short writing task for that day's vocabulary, in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Simplified Chinese.
๐งโ๐ซ Substitute Teacher Guide
A scripted, step-by-step runsheet for today's class -- hand this to anyone covering the room who doesn't know the daily routine.

๐ฏ Essential Question
- How do designers identify the purpose and audience of an image before they ever start designing?
๐ Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson (2 Days), students will be able to:
- Define audience, audience purpose, audience reaction, target audience, demographics, and asset.
- Match a printed image to a client scenario and justify the match in writing.
- Explain why a designer should meet with a client before starting a project.
๐ Standards Alignment
CDOS (Career Development & Occupational Studies)
- CDOS 2 โ Integrated Learning -- students will demonstrate how academic knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace and other settings.
- CDOS 3a โ Universal Foundation Skills -- basic literacy, communication, and problem-solving skills required for a career.
ACP (Adobe Certified Professional) Photoshop Exam Objectives
- ACP 1.1 โ Identify the purpose, audience, and audience needs for preparing images.
๐ Study this for the ACP exam: Domain 1: Working in the Design Industry
๐ Key Vocabulary
- Audience

- Audience Purpose
- What the audience wants to get out of seeing the design, such as buying a product.
- Audience Reaction

๐ง Do Now (Warm-Up)
Look at the image posted on the board. Write down the first three words that come to mind.
๐ Main Workshop / Lesson Sequence
This lesson spans 2 Days. Suggested pacing:
| Day | Focus | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Meeting the Vocabulary | Do Now + share-out (5 min): every image has a purpose and an audience, even ones that seem random. Mini-lesson (12 min): introduce audience, target audience, demographics, audience purpose, audience reaction, and asset with real examples. Guided practice (8 min): as a class, match the first 2 scenario cards to the correct printed images and explain why. Independent/pair practice (15 min): match 3 more scenario cards on the worksheet, writing a 1-2 sentence justification for each. Quick share (5 min): 2-3 pairs share their trickiest match and how they decided. |
| Day 2 | Applying It Like a Client | Do Now (5 min): quick vocab check -- match 3 terms to their definitions from memory. Independent/pair practice (15 min): finish the remaining scenario cards on the worksheet. Create-your-own (12 min): given a random product card, write a 2-sentence target-audience profile and name 1 asset you'd use. Discussion (10 min): "Every client questions" -- what should you always ask a client before starting? (target audience, purpose, desired reaction). Exit ticket (3 min). |
โ Assessment & Exit Ticket
Worksheet is collected and checked against an answer key; partial credit for reasonable justifications even if the "official" match differs.
Exit Ticket: Pick one image from today and write 2 sentences: who is the target audience, and what reaction is the designer going for?
๐ Pull up the anonymous Class Check-In for students to fill out before they go.
๐งฉ Differentiation & Accommodations
English Language Learners: provide translated or bilingual glossaries, visuals, and sentence frames; pair with a peer for meaningful participation. Students with IEPs: provide extended time, step-by-step checklists, and one-on-one or small-group support as specified in each student's plan. Attention-related needs: break the task into smaller steps, use visual timers, and minimize distractions. Students who finish early: extend the task by adding a second design variation, mentoring a classmate, or writing a short reflection connecting today's skill to a career pathway.
